Candy Fail/ I {heart} Home Depot

Our weather has been all over the place. When it's sunny it's usually below freezing and when it's warm (high 40's low 50's) it's raining. So I'm always looking for little projects for Molly, Gabe and me to do. Sometimes it's craft related and other times it's food. Last week we made some Valentines Day decorations, cinnamon rolls and caramel popcorn. yum. I thought today we would try making candy. I saw this recipe at The Idea Room for Sea Glass Candy. It looked easy and pretty. I was excited about this one, I even bought a candy thermometer. Well mine looks like the pictures at The Idea Room, but it's awful. I burnt it. I added flavoring, but it tastes like burnt sugar. SAD. On the plus side Molly and Gabe had fun making it. Maybe I'll have to try it again another time. Maybe next time I'll also try really paying attention. Who knew that 5 degrees would make such a difference... Drew was confused as to how I burnt it when I had a candy thermometer. I think I'll blame it on being pregnant.? I'm not sure what my excuse will be next month, maybe that I'm sleep deprived.

Speaking of activities did you know that Home Depot has a kids workshop day every month? That's right the first Saturday of every month from 9-12 you can go and make a fun little project with your kids. I had heard about it before, but something else would come up or I'd forget. Last time we were at the Home Depot a really nice older woman asked us if we had ever been and told us all about it. So when we got home it went on the calender. It was so fun. Molly and Gabe got little aprons, made a heart shelf (Molly did all the hammering/gluing all by herself. Drew assisted Gabe a little.), and then they got a pin for their aprons with a picture of the heart shelf on it. Some kids had a ton of pins. Maybe that will be us someday. I promised Molly and Gabe that they could paint their shelves. I'll have to post pictures of that when we do it. Maybe that will be tomorrow's project. I love Home Depot.

Spiderman

Drew and I have come up with a few front runners for names. Sometimes I'll ask the kids what they think of a certain name. Gabe responds with "No" and "Good" about equally. Molly always says "that's not a good one". When I ask the kids what we should name the baby Gabe likes to give me friends' baby's names or he'll say Moses. Molly always responds the same way "Spiderman". It has a nice ring to it doesn't it? Spiderman Moses Wilkerson.

Yesterday was the first day of preschool registration. After waiting FOREVER I got Molly and Gabe registered. It took 5 hours. I knew that it would be a while, but I wasn't prepared for that. I was so proud of Molly and Gabe they handled being bored out of their minds like little champs. After we left the early childhood education offices I felt like everyone needed a treat. We had about an hour and a half before it was time to pick up Drew so we went to McDonald's. It was around 3:30 so there weren't many people there. Molly and Gabe actually played in the play area. They had a ton of energy to get out and it was nice being able to let them climb and run. I'm ready for spring. Anyway after getting them registered I think I have more questions than before. I guess there is 1/2 day preschool and full day preschool. They are two separate programs and you don't get a choice. They go through all of the applications and then you're put into the program that you "qualify" for. I'm not sure what that means. I asked if it was based on age and the lady said no that certain schools only offer one program or the other. She also said that they would make sure Molly and Gabe were in the same school/program because they are siblings. I've heard some horror stories about the school assigning programs here. It's at least a relief that they wouldn't try to put Molly and Gabe at different schools. They also bus all the preschoolers. I know that Molly would be thrilled to take the bus, but 3 & 4 seems awfully young to me. I think it does help that it would only be 3 & 4 year olds on the bus but still. Anyway, 4 yr olds get placed first and then 3 yr olds. Molly should get in without any problems. Gabe might be put on a waiting list because he'll be 3. I guess we'll be finding out in the next few months...

Basically whenever it snows more than two inches school gets cancelled. It's kind of ridiculous. I think the kids have already missed over a week of school. Drew got really annoyed this week when his campus was closed on Wed. Oh well. At least Drew doesn't have to make up the days that he has off. His students just don't get all of the class time they should. Changing the subject Kentucky does a great job salting/plowing the streets. We live on a bus route. Our street gets salted before, during and after it snows.

Drew asked me if I was embarrassed that our kids don't know how to play in the snow. I think they're funny.

Big Girl

Molly is in Primary now. Last week she volunteered to give the opening prayer. She got a little bracelet reminder that she wore all day Sunday and Monday. She talked about it throughout the week. Today was the day. I was so proud of her. She even spoke at an audible level. Sometimes I forget how shy Molly is. It's fun watching her grow up.

After church while Gabe was napping Molly and Drew played with the train. Notice her dress. I found it at Target for $5. You can't beat Christmas clearance. I also found two matching boy suits for $6.74 each. They're so cute. They have gray pants, white shirts, snowman ties and black corduroy coats. I'm a little nerdy. I'm excited about dressing my boys alike. Not all the time, but definitely sometimes. The baby's outfit will be a little big 12 months was the smallest size I could find. Gabe's should fit him perfect, hopefully.

(I hemmed my pants! I did it on a day that Drew wasn't home so I decided to use the Crap I've Made blog. Thanks Jess. I didn't trust myself to cut them measuring by myself. I'd still like to try hemming them the other way, but maybe I'll try it on a different pair of pants first. But I think they look good.)

(Marcia- The canvases that I was looking for were really simple. The girl made a bunch of simple stencils ex. plane, car, train etc. So there was a different shape on each canvas and then I think she attached them all and mounted them to the wall? It was really cute and I remember thinking that it looked easy, but I don't know where I saw it. )

Question

Has anyone ever tried to hem jeans like this before? Sadly my one pair of maternity jeans (that fit through the last trimester) got stained :(. I'm still a little bitter so I won't share the story. I hate having to spend money on maternity clothes when I only have 2 months left. Oh well. Anyway the new ones I found are way too long. I need to hem them, but I'm nervous about ruining them...

I have a bunch of pictures and different things from Christmas break that keep meaning to blog about, but I keep getting sucked into crafting blogs. I saw the cutest canvases that someone made for their nursery a few months ago. Now that I'm ready for a project like that I can't find the blog it came from. The problem with crafting blogs is that you start at one which leads to another and then to another. By the end my night is gone and I've found all kinds of things that I wasn't initially looking for like how to hem jeans or another cute headband tutorial. I did see this post on House of Smiths that I thought was amazing. I don't know who this woman is, but I've decided that I need to befriend her and then have her come and decorate my house. Or I could kidnap her :)... but really who has a laundry room that looks like that?

Tangled, Christopher Nolan and a little more...

Today was the last day of Drew's Winter break. We decided to take the kids to a movie. This was a first for Molly and Gabe. So fun. We took them to Tangled. It was priceless looking over at their faces throughout the movie. On occasion Molly would gasp and ask if I saw that. Gabe surprised me and sat through the whole thing. (Gabe isn't as into movies as Molly) It was a nice day out. We came home loaded up on candy talking about beautiful long hair.



Drew told me the only thing he wanted for Christmas was Inception on Bluray. (He saw it with a friend when it was in theaters.) I didn't disappoint. So Drew and I spent Christmas night watching it. I suppose everyone judges movies differently, but if I'm still thinking about a movie days later or dreaming about it then I know it was a good movie. I did feel sad after watching it and not only because the ending was sad. Sometimes after watching a really well made movie or reading a great book I feel very unoriginal and unimaginative. Christopher Nolan is amazing and that's all I have to say about that.

Drew did have a whole month off of work so we rented a few movies that deserve some kind of mention and a couple that don't. We rented Knight and Day. I thought it was enjoyable. "Nobody follow us or I'll shoot myself and then her". We also rented "The Other Guys". This movie was dumb really dumb, but I did laugh out loud a few times. The first 10 minutes or so with Dwayne Johnson and Samuel Jackson was really funny. Whenever something goes wrong and ask why Drew likes to respond with "I'd credit it to poor life choices". It's more funny when Drew says it to someone else who has no idea what he's talking about...
